Jesus called in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to the women, "Take off the grave clothes and let him go" (John 11).

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons also are called to "come out!" We have a "true self," an "inner light," an authentic person that too often has been buried by the world. A life of authenticity means claiming who you really are and living from this place of integrity.

If you'd like to pursue a professional spiritual direction/guidance relationship, check out Spiritual Directors International. There are resources on selecting a spiritual director and a searchable database to find spiritual directors in your area. When you call, be sure to ask what the spiritual director thinks or believes about LGBT people; you will want someone who has unconditional positive regard with respect to your sexuality.

Out & Authentic® is a resource website for people on their spiritual quests. Follow us on Twitter for occasional reflection questions or comments.
